Even though a Chevy didn’t win during Daytona’s just-concluded Speedweeks, the company still had a big presence at the many events.

Chevy vehicles – ranging from the Silverado 1500 RST to the Camaro ZL1 1LE to the C8 Corvette Stingray – served as pace cars for, respectively, Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series, and Sunday’s Daytona 500.

All of those vehicles were finished in the same shade of Rapid Blue with unique black, white and red pace car graphics, and a just-released video from Chevy offers fans a chance to see these vehicles up close as part of a promotion for Chevy MyWay.

That’s a new online service launched by the company to allow customers to find out more about Chevy products through a live stream video chat with sales representatives. To promote the launch of that service, Chevy and Daytona officials took part in a 17-minute video that provides a lot of good information about Chevy’s history at the track, the pace vehicles, and more.

We found the most interesting segments to be with Kip Childress, assistant series director, NASCAR Cup Series, and Jim Campbell, vice president of Chevrolet Performance and Motorsports.

Childress had the responsibility – and pleasure – of serving as the Corvette pace car driver during the Daytona 500, and he explained a little about the importance of the pace car, primarily as a safety feature.

“We put the car in front of the field to make sure the field stays under control,” he explains. “As we roll off to start the race, we help the teams set their pit road speeds. They don’t have a speedometer in the car, so they set their tachometers by the pit road speed that we run. When we ease off, we’ll actually have the lights off. A lot of folks if they’ve never seen a race or maybe even they’ve seen ‘em at maybe their local short track, it’ll confuse them. We wait until we hit that pit road speed and we turn the lights on and we call the tower and it lets the tower, the spotters, everyone there know and the drivers behind us of course that we’ve reached pit road speed. That’s where they’ll set that tachometer reading.”

Childress says he sits in the pace car with his helmet and earplugs on, communicating with the race director and series director who act as spotters for him, “letting me know when it’s clear to go out and pick up the leader, who the leader is, and then what we’re looking for once we get onto the track. If it’s a big accident, it can get pretty exciting on the radio.”

As for his time behind the wheel of the new mid-engine Corvette, Childress called it “a blast” to drive.

Meanwhile, Campbell and Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile offer viewers an interesting look inside and out at the actual GM concept car, Firebird 1, designed in 1953 by GM’s Harley Earl that has always served as the model for the car on top of the legendary Daytona trophy.

[VIDEO] Sarah-n-Tuned Offers a Unique Review of the 2020 Corvette

[VIDEO] Sarah-n-Tuned Offers a Unique Review of the 2020 Corvette

By now, we’ve seen lots of reviews of the new mid-engine Corvette, but we have to say the latest from a YouTuber whose channel is called “ AHREF=”https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHSbIfwVuec_BwUrYAqN_qw”>Sarah-n-Tuned” has to be one of the best.

Her dry humor, along with that of her female passenger, definitely adds a different feel to this assessment of the 2020 Corvette Z51 Rapid Blue convertible loaned to her by General Motors.

For example, in her walkaround of the car, she notes that the side mirrors stick way out, prompting her to say “big ears are cute.”

The car has an “adorable” Stingray emblem on the top of the trunk lid, she says.

There’s an LED light and a 12v power outlet “so your gymnast that lives in the frunk can charge their smartphone or light a cigarette,” she quips.

The row of buttons on the center console, she says, “looks like a cluster-f***” but it’s “actually intelligent the way they did this.”

She notes that the sun visors sound like they’re made out of wood when you flip them up and then points to the warning label that, she says, reads “Advertisement de Cousin Goofball ’cause all cars need that label nowadays.”

One thing she “absolutely” loves about the car is the rearview mirror, calling the quality of the system “astonishing.”

“I swear to you when I was driving this thing,” she says, “I was watching people parked behind me picking their nose, talking on their cell phone, the smallest little details. You can definitely identify people in their cars behind you while they’re driving. I know that, that’s George or Gertrude … senior citizens driving behind me apparently.”

Two criticisms of the interior are the buttons on the steering wheel to control the audio system “feel cheap, like the one thing in here that feels cheap,” and the lack of space in the passenger compartment to store stuff – “pretty much have to rely on your frunk and trunk if you want to put anything in the car.” P>

Sarah notes that GM specifically sent her an email before the review asking her not to take the Stingray on the track or do any hefty performance driving. “What the f*** else is a Corvette for?” she protests.

But don’t miss her action on the road with her friend in the passenger seat, especially as they test the Corvette’s acceleration and braking capabilities. “Dude, my neck!” “My face! My face!” among others that will crack you up. P>

Sarah gives the new C8 “a ton of credit” for its daily driver ability. “You would think a car that looks like this, especially even just sitting in it, that it wouldn’t be comfortable, but it is,” she says. “In touring mode, this thing is super plush and comfy. I’m 5-11 and wearing heels right now, and I still am not cramped in here. It is a comfortable car.”

Finally, Sarah rates the car in several categories, using some rather unique methods.

For example, on her Bean Score, which is “based on the feeling you get behind your belly button when you give it the beans,” the Stingray earns 3.7 Beans out of 5. “This thing is seriously quick from a dig, and it’s fast from a roll. However, I have to say at times when I was getting on it, I kinda felt like, yeah, this thing could use a little more power. But when you launch this car, it means business.” P>

On the Squid Score, “a ridiculous assessment” of the vehicle’s handling, the Corvette earns 3.4 Squids out of 5.

On the Cookie Score, based on what you get for what you spend, an assessment of value, in other words, she gives the Corvette a solid 5 Cookies, even with the 3LT and Z51 packages.

“Honestly, I don’t care what trim spec you get this car in, I think it is an astonishing value,” she raves. “I am thoroughly impressed with the overall quality of this car. The question is, though, is this thing going to drastically depreciate in value like previous generations once it’s a couple of years old? That we’ll have to wait and see.”

[VIDEO] Sarah-n-Tuned Offers a Unique Review of the 2020 Corvette

Finally, on the Penguin Score, “my assessment of how much I personally like a car,” Sarah gives the C8 another 5 Penguins!

Based on comments from regular viewers, it’s apparently a rare thing for Sarah to give any vehicle a pair of 5’s, so kudos to the Corvette.

“I’m so thoroughly impressed with this car,” she concludes. “I can’t say that enough. I absolutely love the color in and out on this thing. It’s a fantastic car – I’ll just leave it at that.”

At least no parts are required to fix a Technical Service Bulletin issued recently by General Motors for the 2020 Corvette.

The TSB points out that a label with the wrong radio frequency identification number was affixed to the back of the radio display in the cabin of some C8 Stingrays.

The fix is simple, though. The dealer will just print a new label in color and place it inside the owner’s manual of the affected car. Reports say that GM has corrected the applicable Certificate Identification Numbers for the Near-Field Communication device with an updated label that’s added to the back of the radio display. Owners are also asked to place the letter with the new CIN in the glove compartment with their owner’s manual.

2020 Corvettes in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are affected by the TSB, but we would assume the remaining 2020 models still waiting to be produced would already have the updated label.

[PICS] Chevrolet Adds Zora to the C8 Corvette’s Windshield

Although Chevrolet has already completed a little over half of its planned production of 2020 Corvettes for the year, that doesn’t mean they are done making enhancements as production rolls on. Our friends at Kerbeck Corvette in Atlantic City sent us some new photos from their latest shipment of C8s which just arrived from Bowling Green. The new pics show the addition of two subtle graphics found on the 2020 Corvette’s windshield.

Here is Dave Salvatore from Kerbeck with the news:

“Two of our cars had these additions to the windshield. On the passenger side, lower corner, is a silhouette of Zora Duntov which has to be one of the coolest things I’ve seen on this new car! On the driver side, lower corner, etched into the tint are a set of crossed flags and the words Team Corvette!”

[PICS] Chevrolet Adds Zora to the C8 Corvette's Windshield

The Zora graphic was used by “Team Corvette” during development as part of the identification system that would allow GM employees into the secure work areas where the car was being developed. The public got its first look at the Zora graphic which were hidden as easter eggs on a camouflaged C8 Corvette as the mid-engine prototype was publically acknowledged for the first time in April 2019 with current Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter driving GM CEO Mary Barra to a “Tunnels to Towers” celebration in New York City.

For those new to the car, Zora Arkus-Duntov was the Corvette’s first chief engineer who took charge of the under-powered two-door roadster and transformed into a world-class sports car. One of his dreams was always to make a mid-engine Corvette and we know he would be smiling about the current C8 Corvette today.

Zora Graphic on the C8 Corvette

Dave tells us that the two Corvettes with the new windshield graphics are the highest VINs yet received by the dealer. From the pics, we can one of the VINs is #11077. He has two more truckloads coming in later this week and will confirm if they all contain the new windshield graphics.

Dave rightly concludes that “Now, some Corvette owners will get to have Zora go along for a ride with you every time you take out your C8.” We love that thought as C8 Corvette owners couldn’t ask for a better co-pilot or patron saint than the famous Corvette engineer!

QUICK SHIFTS: Sam Schmidt's C8 Corvette, a New Ride for GTA Fans, DIY C8 Engine Cover Swap, Vintage Corvette Racers, and More!

Welcome to another fun-filled edition of Quick Shifts! Quick Shifts is a content feature here at CorvetteBlogger featuring links to Corvette and automotive-related stories of interest. The content that we have hand-selected for you this week includes Sam Schmidt taking a drive in his new C8 semi-autonomous motorcar, GTA online fans have a new mid-engine sports car to play with, a DIY on how to change out your C8 Corvette’s engine cover, and a fun video showing vintage Corvette racers being thrown around the Nurburgring. Our throwback for the week is a look at the 1969 Corvette ZL1 in Monaco Orange.

FIRST GEAR:

Sam Schmidt is proof that you can’t keep a racer down for very long. The former IndyCar racer turned team owner became a quadriplegic following a high-speed crash at the Walt Disney World Speedway in 2000. We’ve been following his most recent exploits with Arrow Electronics and the Semi-Autonomous Motorcar, or SAM, that allows the former racer to drive at speeds over 100 mph once again utilizing advanced sensors and cameras. His previous SAMs were built using a C7 Corvette Z06 and now Schmidt has been upgraded to the mid-engine C8 Corvette. Take a hot lap with Sam as he controls the C8 Corvette from the passenger seat with his special sunglasses and breathing tube:

SECOND GEAR:

The C8 Corvette has officially been added to GTA Online where it’s known as the Invetero Coquette D10. The latest Coquette is based on the mid-engine Chevy as it features many of the same design elements. The car was added to the game as part of the 1.51 LS Summer Special update earlier this month. The C8 Corvette may be one of the best values in exotic cars in the real world, but in Los Santos, the car will cost you a mere $1.51 million!

THIRD GEAR:

One of the top modifications we’ve seen from C8 Corvette owners is adding a custom engine cover to the Stingray’s LT2 V8 engine. After all, Chevy designers worked with engineers to show off the 6.2 Liter V8 under the rear glass so now owners are turning to the aftermarket for custom covers done in the C8’s various exteriors like Sebring Orange and Rapid Blue. Our friends at the Daily Downshift have added a weight-saving carbon-fiber engine cover to their ride, and in this video, they show how to properly remove the pesky clip on the front without damaging it.

FOURTH GEAR:

As we hit fourth gear, we bring you the sights and sounds of vintage C2 Corvette racers and a Grand Sport Replica tearing up the racetrack at the Historic GP Zandvoort and Oldtimer GP at the Nurburgring. These drivers show no fear whatsoever as they literally drift around various high-speed corners of the track. With a soundtrack that matches the excitement, this quick 3-minute 26-second video is one that old-school racing fans will not want to miss:

REVERSE:

The legend of the extremely-rare Corvette ZL1 has been well-told over the years with enthusiasts knowing that GM built just two 1969 Corvette ZL1s for the public. The all-aluminum ZL1 motors added $4,700 to the cost of the car, which was basically the same price as a base Corvette. While the existence of the first ZL1 was widely known as a Yellow Corvette with a black stripe now owned now by Roger Judski, the location of the second ZL1 was somewhat of a mystery. Seven years ago we were at the 2013 Bloomington Gold and captured these photos of the second ZL1 Corvette as it was presented for certification judging.
