[VIDEO] Building a Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Project in the Driveway

[VIDEO] Building a Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Project in the Driveway

We first told you back in June about a guy named Jack Wendel who is bravely going where no man has gone before as he began transforming his brand-new C8 Corvette Stingray into something … well, something definitely different than what left the Bowling Green factory a few months ago.

In his latest post on his YouTube channel called ShadeTree Supercar, Wendel gives a peek at all the progress he’s made over the past few months transforming his mid-engine Stingray convertible into his own creation inspired by the C2 Sting Ray.

“The problem is, people see it as a Corvette and I’m destroying something that they consider beautiful. So from that perspective, you know, I kind of understand it,” Wendel told The Drive back in June. “But they’re not seeing the other perspective: I’m building something and I needed a good platform to start with. What better platform is there than the C8 to start with?”

Indeed, once he’s completed his “masterpiece,” Wendel apparently hopes to offer a similar kit to other Stingray owners, even going so far as to buy two coach building companies to help him with the project.

Recent photos that have been shared recently to the /r/ShittyCarMods subreddit show a barely recognizable C8, with homemade fiberglass body panels, taillights, and cutouts for pop-up headlights, all inspired by the C2 Corvette.

According to GM Authority, the original poster says they’ve known Wendel for 20-plus years and that he’s already built two C5 Corvette convertibles with mods inspired by the C1 Corvette.

Some enthusiasts would argue that the C8 is close enough to perfection that it doesn’t need any such mods, but it’s Wendel’s money to burn. Still, we can’t help but be a little sad to see a beautiful C8 convertible chopped up in such a drastic fashion, and at least in our opinion, definitely not for the better.

We’ll give the guy credit for having the stones to undertake this project as it caused us to have fits of anxiety just to have the rear bumper removed from our 2020 Stingray to have a high wing spoiler installed!

Besides the retro-flavored body changes, we’re also concerned, like GM Authority, about how the engine is going to stay cool with all the side intake vents and head exchangers covered up with said body changes.

What’s your opinion of this one-of-a-kind C8?

How can we describe this heavily modified 1971 Corvette Stingray?

If you’re like this writer, it probably leaves you speechless.

The “unique” (for lack of a better word) Corvette is up for sale or trade on craigslist out of the Huntsville, Alabama area.

If you’re looking for a vehicle to scoop up snow on the street in front of your house this winter, then this Corvette’s one-of-a-kind front end might just be the answer. I keep wanting to pick up this car and use it to scrape the frost off my windshield.

The car appears to have been transformed with some sort of a Greenwood widebody, maybe such a kit on steroids, with exposed headlights and fender vents up front and a wide rear end reminiscent of the mid-70s.

We aren’t offered many details in the listing about the car, other than it doesn’t run, despite having a new built 454 engine and transmission, perhaps because the starter is said to be bad. The interior appears to be original and in need of new carpet and a good overall cleaning, for starters.

You won’t get the slick black wheels unless you shell out the owner’s asking price of $18,000, though he does say he’s willing to trade for a chopper or a bagged Harley – “no other cars or trucks.”

What trades would you be willing to make?

While the new C8s are definitely head-turners, there’s nothing like a restored chrome-bumper C3 to turn a few heads.

Take, for example, this stunning 1970 coupe that’s being offered on Craigslist out of the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area at the price of $40,000, or best offer.

Based on the photos that accompany this beauty, there appears to be little work remaining to be done.

The original L46 350 V8 engine has given way to a much more powerful small-block GM Performance engine that include heads, intake and radiator all done in aluminum. With a Holley 750 carburetor, MSD Ignition, and Hooker Headers, the engine pumps out an impressive 430 horsepower, according to the seller. It’s hooked to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission, and he’s also installed Wilwood brakes and a new emergency brake system and completely replaced the suspension.

Little wonder, then, that the seller maintains that this vintage C3 “runs and drives amazing.”

The black leather interior is described as “all original” and in “excellent” condition, and the photos appear to back up that declaration. All the gauges work, even the clock, and storage bags for the T-tops and the removable rear window are also included. The car is also one of just 425 produced with shoulder seat belts.

But the real talking point of this car, in our opinion, has to be that outstanding Candy Tangerine paint that appears to be in perfect condition. Coupled with the aggressive aftermarket wheels, big-block hood, front spoiler, and side pipes, the car definitely strikes a menacing pose on the street.

Little wonder that one of the photos shows a large trophy from a car show resting comfortably in the front seat.

As the seller summarizes it, “this car is a real head turner – vary rare and hard to find!”
